Manuscript insertion at the end of the first edition of John Wesley's Reasons Against a Separation from the Church of England (1758)
Description
Inserted at the end of the concluding pamphlet in a collection of thirteen treatises published under the title, A Preservative against Unsettled Notions in Religion. Bristol: E. Farley, 1758. This insertion, along with a few corrections in the text, are Charles' emendations preparatory to a separate publication of the pamphlet in 1760 (two editions), which also included seven new hymns by Charles. Although the only other publication of the Preservative collection (1770) did not include these changes, two subsequent editions of the Reasons, including the alterations, appeared after that: in John Wesley's collected Works (vol. 23, 1773) and a separate edition (1785). In the latter two editions, one word of Charles's poetry was amended, apparently by John, but Charles's other changes and additions were kept. JPG file (493 KB).
